When travelling with Citiliner, it’s important to understand the ins-and-outs of joining us on our coaches, the rules when on board, and all that fine print that you might have overlooked when booking with us.

As one of the most affordable ways to travel across South Africa, we cater to thousands of passengers each year and we want all of our passengers to get the most from their experience with us.

Here then are a few Terms and Conditions made simple in order to maximise your trip.

  1. The rules around luggage

Each passenger is allowed two suitcases when boarding, free of charge. Each item cannot exceed 80cm x 60cm x 30cm in size, nor can this luggage weigh more than 30kg in total. Kindly note that Citiliner has the right to refuse any luggage that does not comply with these conditions.Travelling with us? Here are our Terms and Conditions.

Large items must be placed in the designated luggage compartment and loaded by an employee or agent of Citiliner. Passengers must kindly obtain a Citiliner luggage sticker when boarding. Unaccompanied luggage will unfortunately not be loaded and all loaded items are transported at one’s own risk.




  1. The rules around travelling documents when crossing borders

Before boarding, kindly ensure that you have a valid passport and all required travel documents if you are embarking on a cross-border journey.

Unfortunately, Citiliner cannot accept responsibility for passengers who are refused entry at a border for any reason. In this event, Citiliner cannot be held responsible if you are prevented from continuing your journey with us and we cannot be held liable for any claims brought against us.

We do our best to keep you travelling seamlessly: Passport checks will be conducted by us ahead of departure but you are advised to contact your nearest embassy or consulate to make sure that your documents are in order.

For your information, please note that you must be 18 years or older to travel across a border unaccompanied.

  1. The rules around insurance

Citiliner does not provide general insurance cover for its passengers, their property or luggage, but we do encourage that you seek out insurance before travelling with us to ensure that you adequately insured.

  1. The rules around unaccompanied children & Infants

Unaccompanied children under the age of 12 are unfortunately not allowed to travel with us. Children 12-years and older, however, must possess proof of identity when boarding, which is also required when buying their tickets.

Children over the age of two will be required to purchase a ticket at a child’s fare. Infants under the age of two, however, can travel for free provided that they sit on an adult’s lap.






  1. The rules around alcohol and drugs

Alcohol may not be consumed on any Citiliner coach. Furthermore, any intoxicated passengers will not be allowed to board. Should they be found on board, they will be instructed to leave the bus immediately. Strictly no drugs.

  1. The rules around pets

It’s not nice leaving your pets at home, but unfortunately, no animals are allowed onto a Citiliner bus. Of course, a trained guide dog accompanying a blind person is allowed.

  1. The rules around pregnant passengers

You and your unborn child’s safety is our priority. As such, unless you have a medical certificate stating that you are fit to travel, you are advised not to make a booking with us.

If you are more than 28 weeks into your term, a medical certificate stating that you are fit to travel must be handed to the crew when boarding. If you are more than 36 weeks into your term, however, you will not be accepted for travel. This is for your own safety.
