Best places in South Africa to see flowers this Spring

 In Things to do

What is the first thing that comes to mind when you think of spring? We have seen some amazing places on board a Citiliner while transporting thousands of passengers over the years. So, to take advantage of the changing season, we thought it only fitting to look for some of the best places to see flowers in full bloom this spring.

Cosmos Country

What better way to start the list than with a destination named after a flower? Situated in the southwestern part of Mpumalanga, this area got its name from, you guessed it, the multitude of cosmos flowers that bloom here. You can expect to see nothing shy of a kaleidoscope of white, purple and pink flowers, particularly in late summer, when visiting.

Namaqua National Park

You didn’t think we would leave Namaqualand off the list, did you? After the pre-spring rains, the landscape of the Namaqua National Park is transformed into a sea of daisies in a multitude of colours. Of the 3 500 species of flowers growing in this area, approximately 1 000 cannot be found anywhere else on this planet.

Graskop

Back in Mpumalanga, we thought we’d take you on a tour of flowers of a different kind and beauty. The aloe plants with their spikes of yellow flowers are hard to miss if you’re travelling from Graskop to Pilgrim’s Rest.

Port Elizabeth

A day spent bird watching among fresh flowers seems like a pretty good way to kick off the new season and there’s no better place to do so than the Van Stadens Wild Flower Reserve in PE. It is their main focus to preserve indigenous flora and visitors to the reserve can expect to see a unique variety of fynbos, succulents and protea, to name a few.

Tankwa Karoo National Park

Be sure to visit the Tankwa Karoo National Park in August if you wish to catch a glimpse of the yellow floral splendour. Areas such as Die Spruit and Prambergfontein are known to have particularly beautiful displays of flowers. If you plan on visiting nearer to the end of the season, be sure to head to the top of Roggeveld/Gannaga Pass as this area usually comes into flower later in the season.
