CROSSING THE BORDERS WITH CITILINER? HERE IS WHAT YOU NEED TO MAKE YOUR TRIP A BREEZE

For most of us, the festive season is a time to unwind and spend with loved ones, so take the pressure out of your cross-border trip with this handy checklist. Safe travels!

Kindly note: Citiliner cannot be held responsible for any passenger being denied entry at a border. For more details, please see our Terms and Conditions

  • Mandatory requirements & documentation to travel cross-border

It is of the utmost importance when crossing into Zimbabwe, Malawi and Mozambique that you have a valid passport – valid for at least 6 months after your date of return. If you do not have a passport, apply for it well in advance.

Temporary passports can be issued on short notice but they are not accepted by all foreign countries. Keep certified copies of your passport with you for identification purposes and in case you misplace your passport. Do not give your passport over to anyone except immigration officials or if requested to do so for reasons of identification.

  • Travelling cross-border with Children

When leaving or entering South Africa, any child younger than 18 years old will require a valid passport and unabridged birth certificate. This is the law – if you don’t have this you won’t be allowed to travel. It is important for your child to have proof of consent that you are allowing them to cross borders when travelling alone.

This should be signed by both parents and police stamped in the form of an affidavit. If travelling with a parent or guardian, the guardian must produce an unabridged certificate, valid ID and a court order/death certificate and or an affidavit confirming that the parent/s have given permission for the child to travel.

  • Rules regarding luggage

Your luggage is as important to us as it is to you. It is important to follow certain rules when it comes to your luggage so that you can have a pleasant trip with us. This is especially true when it comes to size and weight: each passenger is permitted to take free of charge, at own risk, two suitcases not exceeding 80cm x 60cm x 30cm in size, of a total mass not exceeding 30kg.

Any additional luggage will be charged per kilogram and is subject to space and availability. Please do not board before your bags are safely stowed away. Make sure to personally hand in your bags to the agent to receive a luggage sticker, which you will use later to collect your luggage when you disembark.

  • Brace yourself at the border

We all know that travelling is a wonderful and exciting experience when everything goes to plan. Delays can be up there with some of the worst experiences when travelling. Travelling to countries like Mozambique, Zimbabwe and Malawi are always extremely busy during the festive season as thousands of holiday-makers and homebound passengers are travelling.

This makes the borders busy and can cause significant delays. This is by no means deliberate or intentional and it is why we request that you have all your above documentation in order. It is important to be aware that your trip might be longer than anticipated as these delays are out of our control. Please be patient.
