Travelling to Mozambique, Zimbabwe and Malawi can feel a little intimidating if you’re not properly prepared: What to take, how to take it and all that paperwork can be overwhelming if you don’t know where to start.

Do you have a valid passport?

Travelling to Mozambique, Zimbabwe and Malawi can feel a little intimidating if you’re not properly prepared

When crossing into either Zimbabwe, Mozambique or Malawi it is essential that you have a valid passport – valid for at least 6 months after your date of return.

Fortunately, you don’t need a VISA to enter each country if you are a South African citizen, but make sure that your passport is valid – and make sure that you have it with you! Double check and check again.

Does your child have a valid passport and their unabridged birth certificate?

When leaving or entering South Africa any child younger than 18 years old will require a valid passport and unabridged birth certificate. This is law, so make sure that they have both when traveling, even if you are traveling with them.

It is highly encouraged that they also carry a proof of consent that you are allowing them to cross borders. This should be signed by both parents and police stamped in the form of an affidavit.

This is especially important if your child is travelling alone and is not accompanied by a legal guardian. In this instance, your child should also carry on their person a police-stamped affidavit outlining their destination and the necessary contact details and addresses of the persons they are heading to, including their parents’.

Is your luggage packed correctly?

Heading home this holiday season means that you’ll be all stacked up, but it’s important to respect other passengers and follow certain rules when it comes to your luggage.

This is especially true when it comes to size and weight: Did you know that you cannot have more than two bags and each cannot be larger than this – 80cm x 60cm x 30cm? Also they cannot weigh more than 30kg in total.

It is also vital to know that your bags will not be packed without you present, so please do not board before your bags are safely stowed away. Kindly hand your bags over personally to a Citiliner driver or agent to receive a luggage sticker, which you will use later to collect your luggage when you disembark.


Are you prepared for delays?

Over the festive season the borders leading to Mozambique, Zimbabwe and Malawi are extremely busy as thousands of holiday-makers and homebound passengers look forward to seeing their family and friends.

Inevitably though, this makes for exceptionally busy borders and contributes to delays.
